Courses Explained

GRADE 5



LanguageArts-

This course

has lessons in

mechanics of English, grammar usage and vocabulary.

The main emphasis is on the parts of speech.

Mathematics-Basic math operations plus problem-solving strategies are provided to renew grade level skills. Students have guided practice with a review for each unit.

Science-Students explore life, earth and physical science by reading the topic information and responding to the questions. This course prepares students for future science courses.

American History-This course includes the history of our country from the English Colonies through the War of 1812. The US Constitution and laws are also studied.

GRADE 6



Language Arts 6A-This course contains exercises in grammar

usage, capitalization and punctuation.

Exercises in sentence structure and the building of vocabulary skills are included.

Language Arts 6B-Exercises in this course focus on the critical areas of language plus dictionary and library skills. Each unit contains a review and exam.

Mathematics 6A—The contents of this course includes whole number operations, understanding and using fractions, and decimals. Word problems are part of each section.

Mathematics 6B-This course offers an intense review of math fundamentals plus measurement, percentage and some geometry.

Science-Life, earth and physical science units are included in this course. Each lesson contains essay questions, and a short quiz at the end of each chapter.

U.S. Geography-Using geography themes, the student will explore locations, places and regions of the U.S. Map and graph interpretation are part of this twelve unit study. Each unit is followed by a review section.

Reading-Reading comprehension and test taking strategies are part of this course. Practice tests are found in the back of the book. No final exam is offered for this course.

GRADE 7

 


Social Studies 7A

This 6-week course covers Era 1: Indigenous Societies and Era 2: European Exploration and Colonization, paired with essential map skills and geographic concepts. Students analyze primary sources, trace early migration and trade routes, and examine the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, all while building skills in map reading, spatial thinking, and human-environment interaction.

Social Studies 7B -This 6-week course explores Era 3: The American Revolution and Era 4: The Early Republic, with a focus on civics, the U.S. Constitution, and the foundations of American democracy. Students examine historical documents, evaluate key political ideas, and understand the structure and functions of government through interactive readings and document-based analysis.

Langauge Arts 7A -This 6-week course focuses on developing core English Language Arts skills including parts of speech, sentence structure, and vocabulary development. Students engage with both fiction and nonfiction texts to strengthen reading comprehension, textual analysis, and critical thinking, with weekly digital quizzes, vocabulary practice, and guided reading activities. Writing and discussion prompts support skills in summarizing, identifying main ideas, and comparing texts. Students will also be introduced to narrative writing 

Language Arts 7B 

This 6-week course emphasizes argumentative writing, informational text analysis, and effective communication. Students learn to write with clarity and structure, respond to evidence, and present their ideas both in writing and through oral presentation tasks. Lessons also include grammar and language usage, speaking and listening standards, and research components that help students build confidence in their voice and academic writing.



GARDE 8



Language Arts 8A -Rules of grammar are stressed in lessons dealing with capitalization and punctuation. A review of parts of speech and the identification of different kinds of sentences are a part of this course.

Language Arts 8B-An intensive review of the mechanics of English, the eight parts of speech and the practice of different kinds of writing.

Mathematics 8A—This study is a review of fundamentals in mathematics with emphasis on word problems.

Ratio, proportion, percentage, and geometry lessons are also included.

Mathematics 8B—A review of topics offered in math 8A plus exercises in geometry, interest, ratio and proportion make up this course. Special emphasis is on pre-algebra.

Basic Algebra 8th—For the student who would like to review or advance in mathematics. This course contains 4 units of study; algebra basics, signed numbers, formulas and equations. Enrollment is subject to approval.

Earth & Life Science-Contained in this course are 7 units and 35 lessons pertaining to earth and life science.

Basic needs for good health, the effects of drugs and the prevention of AIDS are also discussed.

Physical Science-This course consists of 7 units and 32 lessons reviewing the various aspects of physical science. Related careers are discussed and career references are listed.

Health 8A—Learners gain information on how to identify health problems, consider their options with consequences and make educated choices. Nineteen topics are covered in six units.

New Health 8B-Information about family health, substance abuse, cancer and other diseases are presented in this course.

American History 8A—This first semester course consists of activities pertaining to the Asian immigrants through the War of 1812. Included in this course are lessons about the beginning of our democratic form of government.

American History 8B- This second semester of American history offers a brief review of the first course. The lessons cover the westward movement and the beginning of our political parties.
